As of July 1, 2024, the government no longer funds the $5 co-payment for prescriptions. Since its inception in 2018, Bargain Chemist has consistently offered free prescriptions and will continue to do so, covering the $5 fee for all customers.

Statements from Leadership
Co-Founder Peter Shenoda emphasised the importance of this initiative: “At Bargain Chemist, we are deeply committed to supporting our local communities and ensuring that everyone has access to the medications they need. We will continue to offer free prescriptions, despite the policy changes.”

He continued, “Our primary goal is to enhance the well-being of our communities by making healthcare more accessible and affordable. By offering free prescriptions, we aim to alleviate the financial burden on individuals and families, ensuring that no one has to choose between their health and other essential needs. As a 100% Kiwi-owned local business, we are proud to support New Zealanders with their cost of living across our 22 stores.”

Exemptions:

  • aged 13 years or under
  • holding a Community Services Card (csc) holder, or a dependent child of a csc holder
  • aged 65 years or over
  • holding a Prescription Subsidy Card (psc)

*Other charges relating to funded or partially funded or unfunded medicines apply.
