Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) – What you need to know

Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) have several advantages over the standard COVID tests and will now become the main testing method.

Fast test results mean a faster response time, which is why Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) will help manage increasing demand for testing and relieve pressure on the current PCR system.

Until recently, the only tests available were polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests. This involves going to your doctor or a community-based testing centre and waiting 2-5 days for your results. In the meantime, you would have to self-isolate.

What is Rapid Antigen Testing?

The Rapid COVID-19 Antigen Test is a fast, convenient way to check for COVID-19 infection. The test allows immediate detection of coronavirus antibodies just 24-48 hours after infection using a nasal swab as a sample.

RAT kits are for self-testing and can be used by anyone at home or in the workplace.

Unlike standard COVID tests, the sample doesn’t need to go to a lab to be processed. Instead, tests can be purchased in-store or online and taken at home.

RATs have an overall accuracy of 98.74% and can detect the SARS-CoV-2 antigen within just 15 minutes.

How does Rapid Antigen testing work?

Antigen tests work by detecting the specific COVID-19 proteins in your bodily fluids which indicate an active infection.

If your RAT result is positive, you will need to follow up with a PCR test at your local community testing centre or local GP.

How do I take a Rapid Antigen Test?

There are now 11 approved brands of RAT in New Zealand. Each brand of test has slightly different instructions, so it’s important to read the specific instructions for the one you’re using.

Each kit will include a testing device, an extraction tube, a procedure card, a sterile swab, and a set of instructions.

One of the great things about RATs is that the swab doesn’t go all the way up your nose like the standard PCR test. You simply insert a nasal swab into each nostril and place it into the sample solution. Your kit will guide you through how to prepare the sample bottle and await your results. It’s all very simple, and most people are quite comfortable testing themselves.

Remember, if your test result is positive, you must contact your nearest community testing centre or medical centre. The PCR test is still free and has a wider detection rate.

Who needs Rapid Antigen Testing?

With cases of Omicron now higher than ever, it’s a good idea to have a few RATs on hand if you become a close contact of someone who has tested positive.

Rapid Antigen Tests are only available at medical centres for those who have household contacts with COVID-19, and for people with symptoms. Those who are unvaccinated can also use a Rapid Antigen Test when they require proof of a negative test result.

Buying your own RAT kit can help put your mind at ease if you’ve been exposed to a COVID-19 case. It’s also handy to test yourself if you’re out and about in public spaces or if you’re visiting high-risk family or friends.

Where can I get a RAT test in NZ?

RATs are now available for purchase in-store and online at most pharmacies in New Zealand. But because there is no set price for RATs, the prices between different retailers will vary quite significantly - so it pays to shop around.

There are currently 11 different types of RATs approved for use in New Zealand.

MOH-approved RAT tests are now available at Bargain Chemist as single tests or packs of 5 or 20 tests.
